The Stars (Al-Najm)
62 verses, revealed in Mecca after Absoluteness (Al-Ikhlaas) before He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
I swear by the star when it goes down. (1) Your companion does not err, nor does he go astray; (2) nor does he speak out of his own desire. (3) This is nothing but a revelation that is conveyed to him, (4) taught by One who is Stern in power. (5) and endowed with wisdom; who in time manifested himself; (6) And he was on the horizon of the highest heaven. (7) Then he drew near and drew closer (8) until he was but two bow-lengths away, or even nearer. (9) Then he revealed to Allah's servant whatever he had to reveal. (10) The heart [of the Prophet] did not misconstrue what he saw. (11) What! do you then dispute with him as to what he saw? (12) And indeed, he saw him a second time (13) Near the Lote-tree beyond which none may pass: (14) Near it is the Garden of Refuge - (15) When the Lote-tree was covered over with what it was covered over; (16) [And withal,] the eye did not waver, nor yet did it stray: (17) For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest! (18) HAVE YOU, then, ever considered [what you are worshipping in] Al-Lat and Al-Uzza, (19) And another, the third (goddess), Manat? (20) What, have you males, and He females! (21) That indeed is a division most unfair! (22) These are nothing but names that you and your forefathers have invented, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They are merely following their conjectures and their carnal desires although guidance has come to them from their Lord. (23) Shall man have whatsoever he wisheth for! (24) To God belong the End and the Beginning. (25)
