The Mountain (Al-Toor)
49 verses, revealed in Mecca after Prostration (Al-Sajdah) before Kingship (Al-Mulk)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
I swear by the Mountain, (1) And [by] a Book inscribed (2) on wide-open scrolls. (3) By the House Frequented. (4) By the roof elevated. (5) And the swollen sea, (6) Lo! the doom of thy Lord will surely come to pass; (7) and no one will be able to prevent it. (8) [It will come to pass] on the Day when the skies will be convulsed in [a great] convulsion, (9) And the mountains will move away with a (horrible) movement. (10) Woe on that Day to those who deny the truth, (11) who divert themselves with idle chatter: (12) on that Day they shall be ruthlessly thrust into the Fire of Hell. (13) (it will be said to them): 'This is the Fire which you belied! (14) Is this magic, or do ye not see? (15) Roast in it! And bear you patiently, or bear not patiently, equal it is to you; you are only being recompensed for that you were working.' (16) But in the Gardens the righteous shall live in bliss, (17) Rejoicing in that which their Lord hath vouchsafed unto them; and their Lord will protect them from the torment of the Flame. (18) Eat and drink with relish for that which ye have been working. (19) They will recline on couches arranged in rows and We shall couple them with maidens with large, lovely eyes. (20) And (as for) those who believe and their offspring follow them in faith, We will unite with them their offspring and We will not diminish to them aught of their work; every man is responsible for what he shall have wrought. (21) We shall provide them with fruits and the meat of the kind which they desire. (22) There they will pass a goblet to one another with neither idle talk nor sin, (23) ۞ And young attendants like pearls within their shells, will go round. (24) They will advance to each other, engaging in mutual enquiry. (25) Saying: Surely we feared before on account of our families: (26) But Allah hath been gracious unto us and hath preserved us from the torment of the breath of Fire. (27) Indeed, we used to supplicate Him before. Indeed, it is He who is the Beneficent, the Merciful." (28)
