Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim. (1) By oath of this clear Book. (2) Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning - (3) therein every wise bidding (4) A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), (5) A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, (6) He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, (7) There is only One Lord. It is He who gives life and causes things to die. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. (8) Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. (9) So wait thou the day whereon the heaven will bring forth a manifest smoke: (10) Which would envelope mankind. That would be a grievous affliction. (11) 'Our Lord, remove this punishment from us, we are believers' (12) How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. (13) Then they turned away from him and said, "He is a madman, taught by others!" (14) Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth. (15) One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution! (16) ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. (17) "Deliver the creatures of God to me. I am the trusted messenger sent to you. (18) And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. (19) "And truly, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me (or call me a sorcerer or kill me). (20) But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” (21) He therefore prayed to his Lord, “These are a guilty nation!” (22) [Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued. (23) “And leave the sea as it is, parted in several places; indeed that army will be drowned.” (24) How many gardens and water-springs they left behind! (25) And green crops (fields etc.) and goodly places, (26) and [all that] life of ease in which they used to delight! (27) Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] (28) Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, (29)
