Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Ha Mim (1) By oath of this clear Book. (2) Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. (3) Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom (4) [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] (5) as a mercy (for the human being) from your Lord. Your Lord is All-hearing and All-knowing. (6) He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, (7) There is no worship except for Him He gives life and causes death; your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. (8) Aye! they're in doubt sporting. (9) So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. (10) which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. (11) Our Lord! remove from us the punishment; surely we are believers. (12) How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. (13) whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? (14) Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. (15) The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. (16) ۞ We tried the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them, (17) Saying: Deliver to me the servants of Allah, surely I am a faithful apostle to you, (18) And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. (19) And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. (20) But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” (21) Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people. (22) (The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued. (23) Then leave the sea calm they are an army that will be drowned. (24) How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind, (25) and sown fields, fine sitting places, (26) And pleasant things wherein they took delight! (27) Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. (28) And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. (29)
