Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
HaMeem (1) By the Clear Book. (2) surely We sent it down on a blessed night, We have always sent warnings, (3) on that night every wise decree is specified (4) By a command from Us indeed it is We Who send. (5) A Mercy from your Lord, He is the Hearer, the Knower. (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. (7) There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. (8) Nay, but they play in doubt. (9) Then wait you for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. (10) engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. (11) O our Sustainer, relieve us of suffering, for, verily, we [now] believe [in Thee]!" (12) How can a warning benefit them? The Apostle who explained all things clearly had come to them, (13) whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? (14) We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). (15) The day when We will seize with the greatest seizure We will indeed take revenge. (16) ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], (17) saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. (18) "And exalt not yourselves against God: for, verily, I come unto you with a manifest authority [from Him]; (19) And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: (20) If you do not want to believe, leave me alone". (21) (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." (22) So go forth with My servants by night; surely you will be pursued: (23) (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," (24) They left how many gardens and fountains, (25) and fields of grain, and noble dwellings, (26) And the comfort they enjoyed. (27) Thus (it was), and We gave them as a heritage to another people. (28) Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they respited; (29)
