Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. (1) By the luminious Book. (2) that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. (3) During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. (4) By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), (5) as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain, if only ye would be convinced. (7) There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. (8) Aye! they're in doubt sporting. (9) So watch for the day when the sky begins to emit clear smoke, (10) Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. (11) Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." (12) But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, (13) But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." (14) Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). (15) On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. (16) ۞ And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a noble apostle, (17) Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. (18) And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” (19) "And truly, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me (or call me a sorcerer or kill me). (20) "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." (21) Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people. (22) God said, "Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued. (23) And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." (24) They left - how many! of gardens and springs. (25) and cornfields and splendid buildings, (26) and good things in which they took delight. (27) Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] (28) And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. (29)
