Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Mim. (1) By the Book that makes things clear;- (2) that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. (3) therein every wise bidding (4) By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), (5) A mercy from your Lord; indeed He only is the All Hearing, the All Knowing. (6) He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, (7) There is no god but He: He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore. (8) But they are in doubt, amusing themselves. (9) Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, (10) That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. (11) 'O our Lord, remove Thou from us the chastisement; we are believers.' (12) But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them (13) But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." (14) 'Behold, We are removing the chastisement a little; behold, you revert!' (15) On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. (16) ۞ And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a noble apostle, (17) (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. (18) and do not exalt yourselves in defiance of Allah. I have come to you with a clear authority (as a Messenger). (19) I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me. (20) If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." (21) But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" (22) So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. (23) And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." (24) How much they left behind of gardens and springs (25) And the cornlands and the goodly sites (26) and the life of ease in which they took delight! (27) Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. (28) And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. (29)
