Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha. Mim. (1) By the clear Book, (2) Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning - (3) On that [night] was made clear, in wisdom, the distinction between all things [good and evil] (4) [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] (5) in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). (7) La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. (8) (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. (9) So wait thou the day whereon the heaven will bring forth a manifest smoke: (10) covering the people; this is a painful chastisement. (11) Our Lord! remove from us the punishment; surely we are believers. (12) But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them (13) yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” (14) Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. (15) However, We shall truly take Our revenge on the day when the great seizure takes place. (16) ۞ And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger, (17) "Send the servants of God with me. I am a trustworthy Messenger sent to you. (18) And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. (19) I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me. (20) And if you do not believe me, then leave me' (21) Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". (22) So go forth with My servants by night; surely you will be pursued: (23) "And leave the sea as it is (quiet and divided). Verily, They are a host to be drowned." (24) How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind, (25) And fields and stately mansions, (26) And pleasant things wherein they took delight! (27) Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] (28) Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they respited; (29)
