Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Mim. (1) The perspicuous Book is witness (2) We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night indeed it is We Who warn. (3) In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, (4) A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), (5) A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, (6) the Lord of the heavens and the earth and of all that is between them: if you would only have sure faith. (7) There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. (8) Yet they are in doubt, playing. (9) Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, (10) Covering the people; this is a painful torment. (11) 'O our Lord, remove Thou from us the chastisement; we are believers.' (12) How can a warning benefit them? The Apostle who explained all things clearly had come to them, (13) Whereas they had then turned away from him and said, “He is a madman, tutored!”? (14) We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. (15) On the day when We will seize (them) with the most violent seizing; surely We will inflict retribution. (16) ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] (17) Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. (18) Do not consider yourselves above God. I shall show you a manifest authority (in support of my truthfulness). (19) And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. (20) "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." (21) Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." (22) Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, (23) And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' (24) How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, (25) And green crops (fields etc.) and goodly places, (26) and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! (27) Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] (28) So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. (29)
