Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
HA MIM. (1) I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). (2) Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- (3) During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. (4) A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), (5) As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. (7) There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. (8) Nay, but they play in doubt. (9) Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, (10) Covering the people, this is a painful torment. (11) [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." (12) But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them (13) Whereas they had then turned away from him and said, “He is a madman, tutored!”? (14) Verily We shall remove the torment for a while; but verily ye shall revert. (15) The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. (16) ۞ We tried Pharaoh's nation before them. A noble Messenger came to them, (17) Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. (18) And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: (19) And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. (20) And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. (21) He therefore prayed to his Lord, “These are a guilty nation!” (22) Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, (23) "And leave the sea as a furrow (divided): for they are a host (destined) to be drowned." (24) How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, (25) And crops and noble sites (26) and the life of ease in which they took delight! (27) Thus. And We caused to inherit it another people. (28) And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. (29)
