Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. (1) By the Clear Book. (2) Verily We have sent it down on a blessed night, verily We were to become warners. (3) Whereon every wise command is made clear (4) The command that We have been sending (5) A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. (7) There is no god other than He, who gives you life and death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old. (8) Yet they play about in doubt. (9) Watch for the Day when the heaven will bring clear smoke, (10) which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. (11) "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." (12) How is it possible for them to accept guidance, whereas a Noble Messenger who speaks clearly has already come to them? (13) Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." (14) If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). (15) On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. (16) ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. (17) Saying: "Restore to me the Servants of Allah: I am to you an messenger worthy of all trust; (18) And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” (19) And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me. (20) And if you do not believe me, [at least] stand away from me!" (21) Then he called to his Lord: "These are a sinful people." (22) We commanded him, “Journey with My bondmen in a part of the night you will be pursued.” (23) “And leave the sea as it is, parted in several places; indeed that army will be drowned.” (24) How many were the gardens, springs, (25) and sown fields, fine sitting places, (26) And the delights which they had been enjoying! (27) Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! (28) And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. (29)
