Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
HA MIM. (1) I swear by the illustrious Book. (2) We have sent it down in a blessed night (We are ever warning) (3) During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. (4) Amran (i.e. a Command or this Quran or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers), (5) A Mercy from your Lord, He is the Hearer, the Knower. (6) He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, (7) There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. (8) Nay! They play in doubt. (9) So wait thou the day whereon the heaven will bring forth a manifest smoke: (10) That shall overtake men; this is a painful punishment. (11) (They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!" (12) How should they have the Reminder, seeing a clear Messenger already came to them, (13) Then they had turned away from him (Messenger Muhammad SAW) and said: "One (Muhammad SAW) taught (by a human being), a madman!" (14) Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. (15) The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. (16) ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] (17) Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. (18) "And exalt not (yourselves) against Allah. Truly, I have come to you with a manifest authority. (19) and, behold, it is with my Sustainer - and your Sustainer - that I seek refuge against all your endeavours to revile me. (20) "But if you believe me not, then keep away from me and leave me alone." (21) He therefore prayed to his Lord, “These are a guilty nation!” (22) (His Lord answered): 'Set out with My worshipers in the night, for you will surely be followed. (23) Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." (24) How many were the gardens, springs, (25) And crops and noble sites (26) and good things in which they took delight. (27) We gave these as an inheritance to other people. (28) Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they respited; (29)
