Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Ha Mim (1) By the Book that makes things clear, (2) surely We sent it down on a blessed night, We have always sent warnings, (3) During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. (4) As commands from Us. It is indeed We who send (messengers), (5) A mercy from your Lord; indeed He only is the All Hearing, the All Knowing. (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. (7) There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. (8) Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. (9) Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible, (10) enveloping people. That will be a grievous scourge. (11) "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." (12) How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), (13) but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' (14) Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth. (15) On the day when We shall seize them with the greater seizure, (then) in truth We shall punish. (16) ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, (17) Saying: Deliver to me the servants of Allah, surely I am a faithful apostle to you, (18) Do not set yourselves above God: I bring you clear authority. (19) And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: (20) If you do not want to believe, leave me alone". (21) Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.” (22) So go forth with My servants by night; surely you will be pursued: (23) "And leave the sea as a furrow (divided): for they are a host (destined) to be drowned." (24) How many were the gardens, springs, (25) And fields and stately mansions, (26) and the life of ease in which they took delight! (27) Even so; and We caused to inherit them another people. (28) Neither did the heavens weep for them, nor the earth, nor were they granted respite. (29)
