Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. (1) By the luminious Book. (2) We have sent it down in a blessed night (We are ever warning) (3) Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom (4) [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] (5) as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). (7) There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. (8) Nay! They play in doubt. (9) Then wait you for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. (10) That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. (11) (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” (12) But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, (13) whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? (14) We now remove the punishment for some days so you will again commit the same. (15) However, We shall truly take Our revenge on the day when the great seizure takes place. (16) ۞ And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a noble apostle, (17) saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. (18) and, 'Rise not up against God; behold, I come to you with a clear authority, (19) I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. (20) And if you do not believe me, [at least] stand away from me!" (21) Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people. (22) And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; (23) Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." (24) They left how many gardens and fountains, (25) and sown fields, fine sitting places, (26) and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! (27) As such (it was). And We made other people inherit them. (28) So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. (29)
