Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha. Mim. (1) I swear by the illustrious Book. (2) We revealed it on a Blessed Night, for We were intent on warning; (3) In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, (4) [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] (5) as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). (7) There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. (8) Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. (9) Watch for the Day when the heaven will bring clear smoke, (10) That shall overtake men; this is a painful punishment. (11) "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." (12) How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, (13) Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. (14) [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] (15) On the day when We will seize (them) with the most violent seizing; surely We will inflict retribution. (16) ۞ We had certainly tested the people of the Pharaoh before them to whom a noble Messengers had come, saying, (17) saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. (18) Do not consider yourselves above God. I shall show you a manifest authority (in support of my truthfulness). (19) “And I take the refuge of my Lord and yours, against your stoning me.” (20) "But if you believe me not, then keep away from me and leave me alone." (21) But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" (22) 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. (23) "And leave the sea as a furrow (divided): for they are a host (destined) to be drowned." (24) How many gardens did they leave behind, and how many fountains (25) And fields and stately mansions, (26) and pleasant things in which they delighted! (27) Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] (28) And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. (29)
