Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha. Mim. (1) By the Book that makes things clear;- (2) We sent it down during a Blessed Night: for We (ever) wish to warn (against Evil). (3) On that [night] was made clear, in wisdom, the distinction between all things [good and evil] (4) by Our own command -- We have been sending messages, (5) (As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. (7) There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. (8) Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. (9) WAIT, THEN, for the Day when the skies shall bring forth a pall of smoke which will make obvious [the approach of the Last Hour,] (10) enveloping people. That will be a grievous scourge. (11) (Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers. (12) But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them (13) Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. (14) Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). (15) But on that Day We will assault them most mightily, and then We shall revenge! (16) ۞ And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a noble apostle, (17) Saying: Deliver to me the servants of Allah, surely I am a faithful apostle to you, (18) And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. (19) And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me. (20) If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." (21) Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.” (22) We told him, "Leave the city with My servants during the night. You will be pursued. (23) And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” (24) They left - how many! of gardens and springs. (25) And fields and grand palaces! (26) and good things in which they took delight. (27) Thus. And We caused to inherit it another people. (28) Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. (29)
