Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
HaMeem (1) The perspicuous Book is witness (2) (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- (3) In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, (4) determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) (5) in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, (6) the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them - if you could but grasp it with inner certainty! (7) There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. (8) Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. (9) Watch for the Day when the heaven will bring clear smoke, (10) Covering the people, this is a painful torment. (11) Lord, remove this torment from us for we are believers". (12) How is it possible for them to accept guidance, whereas a Noble Messenger who speaks clearly has already come to them? (13) Whereas they had then turned away from him and said, “He is a madman, tutored!”? (14) We are removing the punishment a little, but you revert. (15) The day when We will seize with the greatest seizure We will indeed take revenge. (16) ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] (17) Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, (18) Do not consider yourselves above God. I shall show you a manifest authority (in support of my truthfulness). (19) And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. (20) If you do not want to believe, leave me alone". (21) And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. (22) (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. (23) And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' (24) How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, (25) and sown fields and splendid mansions, (26) and the life of ease in which they took delight! (27) That is what We did; and We made another nation their heirs. (28) Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, (29)
