Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) (1) By the Clear Book. (2) We have sent it down in a blessed night (We are ever warning) (3) Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. (4) by Our command. Verily, We were set to send a Messenger (5) in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, (6) He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, (7) La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. (8) Yet they are in doubt, playing. (9) Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. (10) Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. (11) Our Lord! remove from us the torment, verily we shall become believers. (12) How can they benefit from admonition, seeing that a messenger had already come to them explaining things clearly? (13) but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' (14) If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). (15) on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! (16) ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. (17) Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. (18) "And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest. (19) and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. (20) And if you do not believe me, then leave me' (21) And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. (22) And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; (23) And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." (24) How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, (25) And green crops (fields etc.) and goodly places, (26) and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! (27) Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. (28) and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. (29)
