Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Ha-Mim. (1) By the Scripture that maketh plain (2) surely We sent it down on a blessed night, We have always sent warnings, (3) During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. (4) As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: (5) A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, (6) He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, (7) There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. (8) Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. (9) So watch for the Day when the sky will come down with a pall of smoke, (10) Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. (11) (They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" (12) How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! (13) whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? (14) 'Behold, We are removing the chastisement a little; behold, you revert!' (15) on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! (16) ۞ We had certainly tested the people of the Pharaoh before them to whom a noble Messengers had come, saying, (17) (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. (18) Do not consider yourselves above God. I shall show you a manifest authority (in support of my truthfulness). (19) I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. (20) "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." (21) (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." (22) Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, (23) And leave the sea intervening; surely they are a host that shall be drowned. (24) How many gardens did they leave behind, and how many fountains (25) and sown fields and splendid mansions, (26) And pleasant things wherein they took delight! (27) Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). (28) Neither did the heavens weep for them, nor the earth, nor were they granted respite. (29)
