Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
HA MIM. (1) By the luminious Book. (2) We sent it down during a Blessed Night: for We (ever) wish to warn (against Evil). (3) Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom (4) by Our own command -- We have been sending messages, (5) (As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, if you really do believe. (7) There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. (8) Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. (9) Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, (10) Which would envelope mankind. That would be a grievous affliction. (11) [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." (12) But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them (13) Then they had turned away from him (Messenger Muhammad SAW) and said: "One (Muhammad SAW) taught (by a human being), a madman!" (14) Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. (15) on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! (16) ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. (17) Saying: "Restore to me the Servants of Allah: I am to you an messenger worthy of all trust; (18) "And exalt not (yourselves) against Allah. Truly, I have come to you with a manifest authority. (19) “And I take the refuge of my Lord and yours, against your stoning me.” (20) But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” (21) But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" (22) So go forth with My servants by night; surely you will be pursued: (23) And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host. (24) How many of the gardens and fountains have they left! (25) And cornfields and noble places! (26) and [all that] life of ease in which they used to delight! (27) Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). (28) and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. (29)
