Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Ha'. Mim. (1) By oath of this clear Book. (2) that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. (3) On this night, every absolute command coming from Us becomes distinguishable. (4) by Our command. Verily, We were set to send a Messenger (5) in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, (6) the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them - if you could but grasp it with inner certainty! (7) There is no god but He: He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore. (8) Yet they play about in doubt. (9) WAIT, THEN, for the Day when the skies shall bring forth a pall of smoke which will make obvious [the approach of the Last Hour,] (10) That shall overtake men; this is a painful punishment. (11) (They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!" (12) How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,- (13) But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." (14) We are removing the punishment a little, but you revert. (15) On the day when We shall seize them with the greater seizure, (then) in truth We shall punish. (16) ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], (17) "Send the servants of God with me. I am a trustworthy Messenger sent to you. (18) And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” (19) I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. (20) If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." (21) Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". (22) Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, (23) (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," (24) How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, (25) And fields and stately mansions, (26) And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; (27) Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. (28) and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. (29)
