Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Ha. Mim. (1) CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! (2) that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. (3) On that night is made distinct every precise matter - (4) As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - (5) A mercy from your Lord; indeed He only is the All Hearing, the All Knowing. (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). (7) La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. (8) Nay, but they play in doubt. (9) Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, (10) enveloping all mankind, [and causing the sinners to exclaim:] "Grievous is this suffering! (11) (They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!" (12) But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them (13) Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." (14) Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. (15) However, We shall truly take Our revenge on the day when the great seizure takes place. (16) ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them (17) "Deliver the creatures of God to me. I am the trusted messenger sent to you. (18) And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. (19) I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. (20) And if you do not believe me, [at least] stand away from me!" (21) Then he called upon his Lord: these are a people guilty. (22) 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. (23) And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' (24) How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind, (25) corn-fields, gracious mansions, (26) And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; (27) Thus it was; and We passed them on to another people. (28) Neither did the heavens weep for them, nor the earth, nor were they granted respite. (29)
