59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
HA MIM. 1 By the luminious Book. 2 that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. 3 During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. 4 The command that We have been sending 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, 6 the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them - if you could but grasp it with inner certainty! 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. 9 So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. 10 Covering the people, this is a painful torment. 11 (Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers. 12 How can they benefit from admonition, seeing that a messenger had already come to them explaining things clearly? 13 Whereas they had then turned away from him and said, “He is a madman, tutored!”? 14 Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). 15 on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! 16 ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, 17 Who said, “Give the bondmen of Allah into my custody; I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger for you.” 18 and, 'Rise not up against God; behold, I come to you with a clear authority, 19 And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. 20 "But if you believe me not, then keep away from me and leave me alone." 21 Then he called upon his Lord: these are a people guilty. 22 So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. 23 Then leave the sea calm they are an army that will be drowned. 24 How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind, 25 And green crops (fields etc.) and goodly places, 26 And favours amongst which they were rejoicing! 27 Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; 28 and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. 29
