Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Ha Mim! (1) By the Clear Book (2) We revealed it on a Blessed Night, for We were intent on warning; (3) therein every wise bidding (4) by Our command. Verily, We were set to send a Messenger (5) as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) (6) He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if only you would have strong faith. (7) There is no god but He; He gives life and makes to die; your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. (8) Yet they play about in doubt. (9) Then wait you for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. (10) which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. (11) (They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" (12) How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), (13) yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” (14) [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] (15) Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. (16) ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. (17) Saying: "Restore to me the Servants of Allah: I am to you an messenger worthy of all trust; (18) And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” (19) I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. (20) If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." (21) Then he called to his Lord: "These are a sinful people." (22) God said, "Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued. (23) Cross the sea by cutting a path through it. Pharaoh's army will be drowned. (24) How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, (25) and cornfields and splendid buildings, (26) And favours amongst which they were rejoicing! (27) Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. (28) And neither heaven nor earth shed a tear over them: nor were they given a respite (again). (29)
