Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Ha. Mim. (1) By oath of this clear Book. (2) that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. (3) on that night every wise decree is specified (4) by Our command. Verily, We were set to send a Messenger (5) in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you (but) have a faith with certainty. (7) There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. (8) Aye! they're in doubt sporting. (9) Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke. (10) which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. (11) Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us we now accept faith.” (12) How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,- (13) Yet they turned their backs on him and said: One taught (by others), a madman. (14) Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth. (15) On the day when We shall seize them with the greater seizure, (then) in truth We shall punish. (16) ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. (17) Saying: Deliver to me the servants of Allah, surely I am a faithful apostle to you, (18) Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. (19) And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: (20) But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” (21) And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. (22) God said, "Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued. (23) "And leave the sea as it is (quiet and divided). Verily, They are a host to be drowned." (24) How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, (25) and sown fields, fine sitting places, (26) And favours amongst which they were rejoicing! (27) Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. (28) And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. (29)
