Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha'. Mim. (1) By the clear Book, (2) We sent it down during a Blessed Night: for We (ever) wish to warn (against Evil). (3) During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. (4) determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) (5) A mercy from your Lord, surely He is the Hearing, the Knowing, (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain, if only ye would be convinced. (7) There is no god other than He, who gives you life and death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old. (8) (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. (9) So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke (10) enveloping all mankind, [and causing the sinners to exclaim:] "Grievous is this suffering! (11) Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us we now accept faith.” (12) How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger. (13) Then they had turned away from him (Messenger Muhammad SAW) and said: "One (Muhammad SAW) taught (by a human being), a madman!" (14) Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). (15) However, We shall truly take Our revenge on the day when the great seizure takes place. (16) ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them (17) saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, (18) and do not exalt yourselves in defiance of Allah. I have come to you with a clear authority (as a Messenger). (19) "And truly, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me (or call me a sorcerer or kill me). (20) And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. (21) Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." (22) We commanded him, “Journey with My bondmen in a part of the night you will be pursued.” (23) Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." (24) How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, (25) And cornfields and goodly positions. (26) and the life of ease in which they took delight! (27) Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. (28) Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite. (29)
