Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Ha Mim! (1) By the Clear Book. (2) (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- (3) Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. (4) As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - (5) A mercy from thy Lord. Verily He! He is the Hearer, the Knower. (6) the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them - if you could but grasp it with inner certainty! (7) There is only One Lord. It is He who gives life and causes things to die. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. (8) In fact, the unbelievers have doubts because of excessive involvement in worldly affairs. (9) Wait for the day (which will come before the Day of Judgment) when the sky will give out dense smoke (10) enveloping people. That will be a grievous scourge. (11) (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” (12) How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! (13) then they turned away from him and said, 'A man tutored, possessed!' (14) Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. (15) The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. (16) ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. (17) [Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allah. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger," (18) and do not exalt yourselves in defiance of Allah. I have come to you with a clear authority (as a Messenger). (19) And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. (20) If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." (21) And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. (22) (His Lord answered): 'Set out with My worshipers in the night, for you will surely be followed. (23) "And leave the sea as a furrow (divided): for they are a host (destined) to be drowned." (24) How many of the gardens and fountains have they left! (25) sown fields, and how noble a station, (26) And the delights which they had been enjoying! (27) Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! (28) And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. (29)
