Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha'. Mim. (1) By the clear Book, (2) Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- (3) on that night every wise decree is specified (4) A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), (5) in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. (7) There is no worship except for Him He gives life and causes death; your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. (8) Yet they are lost in doubt and play. (9) But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke (10) which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. (11) (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” (12) How is it possible for them to accept guidance, whereas a Noble Messenger who speaks clearly has already come to them? (13) Then they turned away from him and said, "He is a madman, taught by others!" (14) [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] (15) The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. (16) ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. (17) Saying: "Restore to me the Servants of Allah: I am to you an messenger worthy of all trust; (18) "And exalt not yourselves against God: for, verily, I come unto you with a manifest authority [from Him]; (19) and, behold, it is with my Sustainer - and your Sustainer - that I seek refuge against all your endeavours to revile me. (20) And if ye will not believe in me, then let me alone. (21) (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." (22) Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, (23) And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." (24) How much they left behind of gardens and springs (25) And cornfields and noble places! (26) And pleasant things wherein they took delight! (27) Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. (28) And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. (29)
