Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha. Mim. (1) By the Clear Book. (2) Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning - (3) (We revealed it on the Night) wherein every matter is wisely determined (4) at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] (5) A Mercy from your Lord, He is the Hearer, the Knower. (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you (but) have a faith with certainty. (7) There is no god except He. He revives and causes to die. (He is) your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. (8) Yet they play about in doubt. (9) So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. (10) engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. (11) Lord, remove this torment from us for we are believers". (12) But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, (13) whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? (14) If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). (15) Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. (16) ۞ We tried the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them, (17) Who said, “Give the bondmen of Allah into my custody; I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger for you.” (18) And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: (19) I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. (20) And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. (21) Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". (22) (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. (23) (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," (24) [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, (25) and sown fields and splendid mansions, (26) and good things in which they took delight. (27) Thus (it was), and We gave them as a heritage to another people. (28) And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. (29)
