Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha. Mim. (1) By oath of this clear Book. (2) (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- (3) (We revealed it on the Night) wherein every matter is wisely determined (4) at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] (5) as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you people believe. (7) there is no deity save Him: It is He who gives both life and death -- He is your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers, (8) In fact, the unbelievers have doubts because of excessive involvement in worldly affairs. (9) So wait thou the day whereon the heaven will bring forth a manifest smoke: (10) Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. (11) Our Lord! remove from us the punishment; surely we are believers. (12) How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger. (13) And they had turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman? (14) Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. (15) on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! (16) ۞ And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger, (17) Saying: Deliver to me the servants of Allah, surely I am a faithful apostle to you, (18) And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. (19) And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. (20) "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." (21) Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people. (22) [Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued. (23) And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” (24) How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, (25) and sown fields, fine sitting places, (26) and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! (27) That is what We did; and We made another nation their heirs. (28) Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. (29)
