Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
HA MIM. (1) The perspicuous Book is witness (2) We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night indeed it is We Who warn. (3) On which all affairs are sorted out and decided (4) at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] (5) A mercy from your Lord. Verily He is all-hearing and all-knowing, (6) Lord of the heavens and earth, and all that between them is if you have faith. (7) La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. (8) Rather they are in doubt, playing. (9) So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke (10) Covering the people; this is a painful torment. (11) Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us we now accept faith.” (12) How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), (13) Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. (14) Indeed, We will remove the torment for a little. Indeed, you [disbelievers] will return [to disbelief]. (15) The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. (16) ۞ We had certainly tested the people of the Pharaoh before them to whom a noble Messengers had come, saying, (17) Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. (18) And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: (19) And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. (20) And if ye will not believe in me, then let me alone. (21) Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". (22) We commanded him, “Journey with My bondmen in a part of the night you will be pursued.” (23) Cross the sea by cutting a path through it. Pharaoh's army will be drowned. (24) How many of the gardens and fountains have they left! (25) And fields and stately mansions, (26) And the delights which they had been enjoying! (27) Thus it was; and We passed them on to another people. (28) Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite. (29)
