Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) (1) By the Clear Book. (2) Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. (3) on that night every wise decree is specified (4) an order from Us. We are ever sending. (5) as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, (6) the Lord of the heavens and the earth and of all that is between them: if you would only have sure faith. (7) There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. (8) (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. (9) So watch for the Day when the sky will come down with a pall of smoke, (10) Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. (11) (Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers. (12) How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! (13) Yet they turned their backs on him and said: One taught (by others), a madman. (14) Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. (15) The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. (16) ۞ We had certainly tested the people of the Pharaoh before them to whom a noble Messengers had come, saying, (17) Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, (18) Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. (19) And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. (20) But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” (21) Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". (22) (He was told): “Set out with My servants by night for you will certainly be pursued. (23) And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host. (24) How much they left behind of gardens and springs (25) and sown fields and splendid mansions, (26) And the comfort they enjoyed. (27) Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. (28) and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. (29)
