Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Mim. (1) By the Clear Book. (2) We revealed it on a Blessed Night, for We were intent on warning; (3) Whereon every wise command is made clear (4) [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] (5) A mercy from your Lord. Verily He is all-hearing and all-knowing, (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you people believe. (7) There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. (8) But they are in doubt, amusing themselves. (9) But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke (10) Which would envelope mankind. That would be a grievous affliction. (11) [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." (12) How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! (13) Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" (14) Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth. (15) On the Day whereon We assault them with the greatest assault, verily We shall take vengeance. (16) ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. (17) Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. (18) "And exalt not (yourselves) against Allah. Truly, I have come to you with a manifest authority. (19) I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. (20) "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." (21) Then he called to his Lord: "These are a sinful people." (22) (The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued. (23) Cross the sea by cutting a path through it. Pharaoh's army will be drowned. (24) How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, (25) sown fields, and how noble a station, (26) and [all that] life of ease in which they used to delight! (27) Even so; and We caused to inherit them another people. (28) So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. (29)
