Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim (1) By the luminious Book. (2) We sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed night [(i.e. night of Qadr, Surah No: 97) in the month of Ramadan,, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. (3) On this night, every absolute command coming from Us becomes distinguishable. (4) By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), (5) As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); (6) the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them - if you could but grasp it with inner certainty! (7) There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. (8) Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. (9) So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke (10) Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. (11) Lord, remove this torment from us for we are believers". (12) How should they have the Reminder, seeing a clear Messenger already came to them, (13) whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? (14) Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth. (15) The day when We will seize with the greatest seizure We will indeed take revenge. (16) ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. (17) Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, (18) "And exalt not yourselves against God: for, verily, I come unto you with a manifest authority [from Him]; (19) And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: (20) “And if you do not believe in me, then have no relation with me.” (21) Then he supplicated to his Lord saying: 'These are sinful people' (22) [Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued. (23) And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." (24) How many gardens did they leave behind, and how many fountains (25) and cornfields and splendid buildings, (26) and the life of ease in which they took delight! (27) Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] (28) And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. (29)
