Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. (1) By the Clear Book. (2) Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- (3) Therein every wise affair is made distinct, (4) By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), (5) in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, (6) the Lord of the heavens and the earth and of all that is between them: if you would only have sure faith. (7) There is only One Lord. It is He who gives life and causes things to die. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. (8) Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. (9) Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, (10) Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. (11) [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." (12) [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, (13) Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. (14) [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] (15) on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! (16) ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): (17) (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. (18) "And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest. (19) I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. (20) "But if you believe me not, then keep away from me and leave me alone." (21) (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." (22) So go forth with My servants by night; surely you will be pursued: (23) Then leave the sea calm they are an army that will be drowned. (24) How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind, (25) and fields of grain, and noble dwellings, (26) and what prosperity they had rejoiced in! (27) Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; (28) And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. (29)
