Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Mim. (1) By the Clear Book (2) Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. (3) During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. (4) By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), (5) in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain, if only ye would be convinced. (7) There is no god but He: He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore. (8) Nay, they are in doubt, they sport. (9) So wait thou the day whereon the heaven will bring forth a manifest smoke: (10) covering the people; this is a painful chastisement. (11) Our Lord! remove from us the torment, verily we shall become believers. (12) How can a warning benefit them? The Apostle who explained all things clearly had come to them, (13) Then they turned away from him and said, "He is a madman, taught by others!" (14) Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). (15) Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. (16) ۞ And verily We tried before them Pharaoh's folk, when there came unto them a noble messenger, (17) [Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allah. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger," (18) Do not set yourselves above God: I bring you clear authority. (19) I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. (20) If you do not want to believe, leave me alone". (21) Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people. (22) (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. (23) Then leave the sea calm they are an army that will be drowned. (24) How many were the gardens, springs, (25) sown fields, and how noble a station, (26) And pleasant things wherein they took delight! (27) Even so; and We caused to inherit them another people. (28) So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. (29)
