Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Ha-Mim. (1) I swear by the illustrious Book. (2) Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. (3) (We revealed it on the Night) wherein every matter is wisely determined (4) The command that We have been sending (5) A mercy from your Lord. Verily He is all-hearing and all-knowing, (6) the Lord of the heavens and the earth and of all that is between them: if you would only have sure faith. (7) There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. (8) Nay, but they play in doubt. (9) So wait thou the day whereon the heaven will bring forth a manifest smoke: (10) Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. (11) (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” (12) How is it possible for them to accept guidance, whereas a Noble Messenger who speaks clearly has already come to them? (13) Yet they turned their backs on him and said: One taught (by others), a madman. (14) 'Behold, We are removing the chastisement a little; behold, you revert!' (15) The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. (16) ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, (17) saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. (18) And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: (19) And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: (20) And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. (21) But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" (22) (He was told): “Set out with My servants by night for you will certainly be pursued. (23) "And leave the sea as it is (quiet and divided). Verily, They are a host to be drowned." (24) They left - how many! of gardens and springs. (25) and sown fields and splendid mansions, (26) And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight! (27) Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] (28) And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. (29)
