Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha, Meem. (1) I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). (2) Verily We have sent it down on a blessed night, verily We were to become warners. (3) On that [night] was made clear, in wisdom, the distinction between all things [good and evil] (4) by Our own command -- We have been sending messages, (5) as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, if you really do believe. (7) There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. (8) But they are in doubt, amusing themselves. (9) Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke. (10) Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. (11) (They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!" (12) How can there be remembrance for them, when a messenger making plain (the Truth) had already come unto them, (13) and they turned away, saying, "He is a trained and insane person". (14) Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). (15) On the Day whereon We assault them with the greatest assault, verily We shall take vengeance. (16) ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], (17) "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! (18) Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. (19) I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. (20) And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. (21) Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". (22) (The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued. (23) (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," (24) How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, (25) And green crops (fields etc.) and goodly places, (26) and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! (27) Thus it was; and We passed them on to another people. (28) The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. (29)
