Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Ha-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. (1) I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). (2) Verily We have sent it down on a blessed night, verily We were to become warners. (3) On that [night] was made clear, in wisdom, the distinction between all things [good and evil] (4) The command that We have been sending (5) as a mercy (for the human being) from your Lord. Your Lord is All-hearing and All-knowing. (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. (7) There is no god but He; He gives life and makes to die; your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. (8) Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. (9) So watch for the day when the sky begins to emit clear smoke, (10) Covering the people, this is a painful torment. (11) Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us we now accept faith.” (12) How can a warning benefit them? The Apostle who explained all things clearly had come to them, (13) Yet they turned their backs on him and said: One taught (by others), a madman. (14) If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). (15) One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution! (16) ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. (17) saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. (18) Do not set yourselves above God: I bring you clear authority. (19) I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. (20) If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." (21) He therefore prayed to his Lord, “These are a guilty nation!” (22) And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; (23) (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," (24) How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, (25) And green crops (fields etc.) and goodly places, (26) And favours amongst which they were rejoicing! (27) Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] (28) And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. (29)
