Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Ha'. Mim. (1) By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, (2) We revealed it on a Blessed Night, for We were intent on warning; (3) therein every wise bidding (4) By a command from Us indeed it is We Who send. (5) A mercy from your Lord, surely He is the Hearing, the Knowing, (6) Lord of the heavens and earth, and all that between them is if you have faith. (7) There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. (8) Yet they are in doubt, playing. (9) So wait thou the day whereon the heaven will bring forth a manifest smoke: (10) Covering the people, this is a painful torment. (11) O our Sustainer, relieve us of suffering, for, verily, we [now] believe [in Thee]!" (12) How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, (13) And they had turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman? (14) Verily We shall remove the torment for a while; but verily ye shall revert. (15) One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution! (16) ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. (17) [Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allah. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger," (18) "And exalt not yourselves against God: for, verily, I come unto you with a manifest authority [from Him]; (19) "For me, I have sought safety with my Lord and your Lord, against your injuring me. (20) "But if you believe me not, then keep away from me and leave me alone." (21) But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" (22) And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; (23) Then leave the sea calm they are an army that will be drowned. (24) How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, (25) And green crops (fields etc.) and goodly places, (26) And pleasant things wherein they took delight! (27) Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. (28) And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. (29)
