Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. (1) By the Clear Book. (2) Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- (3) Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom (4) The command that We have been sending (5) A Mercy from your Lord, He is the Hearer, the Knower. (6) He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, (7) There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. (8) (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. (9) Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible, (10) Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. (11) (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” (12) How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! (13) Then they had turned away from him (Messenger Muhammad SAW) and said: "One (Muhammad SAW) taught (by a human being), a madman!" (14) Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. (15) However, We shall truly take Our revenge on the day when the great seizure takes place. (16) ۞ And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger, (17) Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. (18) And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. (19) And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me. (20) And if ye will not believe in me, then let me alone. (21) Then he called to his Lord: "These are a sinful people." (22) We told him, "Leave the city with My servants during the night. You will be pursued. (23) (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," (24) How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, (25) and cornfields and splendid buildings, (26) And pleasant things wherein they took delight! (27) Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). (28) And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. (29)
