Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Ha-Mim. (1) By the Book that makes things clear, (2) (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- (3) (We revealed it on the Night) wherein every matter is wisely determined (4) A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), (5) As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain, if only ye would be convinced. (7) There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. (8) Yet they play about in doubt. (9) So watch for the Day when the sky will come down with a pall of smoke, (10) That will envelop the people. This will be a painful punishment. (11) Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us we now accept faith.” (12) How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. (13) Whereas they had then turned away from him and said, “He is a madman, tutored!”? (14) Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). (15) Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. (16) ۞ And verily We tried before them Pharaoh's folk, when there came unto them a noble messenger, (17) Who said, “Give the bondmen of Allah into my custody; I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger for you.” (18) Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. (19) And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. (20) "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." (21) Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." (22) (He was told): “Set out with My servants by night for you will certainly be pursued. (23) And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' (24) How many were the gardens, springs, (25) and fields of grain, and noble dwellings, (26) And comfort wherein they were amused. (27) Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; (28) And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. (29)
