Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Ha-Mim. (1) I swear by the illustrious Book. (2) that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. (3) On this night, every absolute command coming from Us becomes distinguishable. (4) at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] (5) as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, (6) He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, (7) La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. (8) Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. (9) So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. (10) That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. (11) 'O our Lord, remove Thou from us the chastisement; we are believers.' (12) How should they have the Reminder, seeing a clear Messenger already came to them, (13) Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" (14) We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. (15) On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. (16) ۞ And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger, (17) saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. (18) And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. (19) I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. (20) "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." (21) But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" (22) 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. (23) And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. (24) They left how many gardens and fountains, (25) And fields and stately mansions, (26) and [all that] life of ease in which they used to delight! (27) Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. (28) Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, (29)
