Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
HaMeem (1) By the Clear Book. (2) Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- (3) During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. (4) [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] (5) A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, (6) the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them - if you could but grasp it with inner certainty! (7) There is no god but He: He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore. (8) Yet they are in doubt, playing. (9) Watch for the Day when the heaven will bring clear smoke, (10) Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. (11) Our Lord! remove from us the torment, verily we shall become believers. (12) How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,- (13) And they had turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman? (14) We are removing the punishment a little, but you revert. (15) The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. (16) ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. (17) "Deliver the creatures of God to me. I am the trusted messenger sent to you. (18) "And exalt not yourselves against God: for, verily, I come unto you with a manifest authority [from Him]; (19) I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. (20) If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." (21) And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. (22) So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. (23) “And leave the sea as it is, parted in several places; indeed that army will be drowned.” (24) How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, (25) And cornfields and noble places! (26) And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! (27) We gave these as an inheritance to other people. (28) Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite. (29)
