Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim. (1) CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! (2) We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night indeed it is We Who warn. (3) (We revealed it on the Night) wherein every matter is wisely determined (4) at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] (5) As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you people believe. (7) La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. (8) Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. (9) So watch for the day when the sky begins to emit clear smoke, (10) That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. (11) Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us we now accept faith.” (12) How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. (13) but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' (14) We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. (15) Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. (16) ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, (17) saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, (18) And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: (19) I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. (20) If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." (21) Then he called upon his Lord: these are a people guilty. (22) God said, "Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued. (23) And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' (24) How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, (25) and sown fields and splendid mansions, (26) and what prosperity they had rejoiced in! (27) That is what We did; and We made another nation their heirs. (28) So the heavens and the earth did not weep for them, and they were not given respite. (29)
