Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
HaMeem (1) I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). (2) Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- (3) On this night, every absolute command coming from Us becomes distinguishable. (4) By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), (5) As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain, if only ye would be convinced. (7) There is only One Lord. It is He who gives life and causes things to die. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. (8) In fact, the unbelievers have doubts because of excessive involvement in worldly affairs. (9) But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke (10) That will envelop the people. This will be a painful punishment. (11) Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us we now accept faith.” (12) How can there be remembrance for them, when a messenger making plain (the Truth) had already come unto them, (13) yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” (14) We now remove the punishment for some days so you will again commit the same. (15) The day when We will seize with the greatest seizure We will indeed take revenge. (16) ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, (17) "Deliver the creatures of God to me. I am the trusted messenger sent to you. (18) Do not set yourselves above God: I bring you clear authority. (19) And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: (20) And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. (21) Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people. (22) (His Lord answered): 'Set out with My worshipers in the night, for you will surely be followed. (23) And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” (24) How many gardens did they leave behind, and how many fountains (25) sown fields, and how noble a station, (26) And the comfort they enjoyed. (27) Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. (28) Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite. (29)
