Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Ha Mim! (1) I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). (2) that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. (3) On which all affairs are sorted out and decided (4) By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), (5) as a mercy (for the human being) from your Lord. Your Lord is All-hearing and All-knowing. (6) Lord of the heavens and earth, and all that between them is if you have faith. (7) There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. (8) Yet they are in doubt, playing. (9) Watch for the Day when the heaven will bring clear smoke, (10) engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. (11) (They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" (12) [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, (13) Whereas they had then turned away from him and said, “He is a madman, tutored!”? (14) Indeed, We will remove the torment for a little. Indeed, you [disbelievers] will return [to disbelief]. (15) The day when We will seize with the greatest seizure We will indeed take revenge. (16) ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], (17) Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. (18) And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. (19) I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. (20) And if ye will not believe in me, then let me alone. (21) And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. (22) [Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued. (23) Cross the sea by cutting a path through it. Pharaoh's army will be drowned. (24) They left - how many! of gardens and springs. (25) corn-fields, gracious mansions, (26) And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight! (27) Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. (28) And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. (29)
