Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
HA MIM. (1) By oath of this clear Book. (2) We have sent it down in a blessed night (We are ever warning) (3) on that night every wise decree is specified (4) By a command from Us indeed it is We Who send. (5) A mercy from thy Lord. Verily He! He is the Hearer, the Knower. (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. (7) There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. (8) Nay! They play in doubt. (9) Wait for the day (which will come before the Day of Judgment) when the sky will give out dense smoke (10) Which would envelope mankind. That would be a grievous affliction. (11) O our Sustainer, relieve us of suffering, for, verily, we [now] believe [in Thee]!" (12) How can there be remembrance for them, when a messenger making plain (the Truth) had already come unto them, (13) and they turned away, saying, "He is a trained and insane person". (14) We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. (15) On the day when We will seize (them) with the most violent seizing; surely We will inflict retribution. (16) ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): (17) [Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allah. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger," (18) And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: (19) I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. (20) And if ye will not believe in me, then let me alone. (21) Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". (22) (The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued. (23) And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' (24) How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, (25) and fields of grain, and noble dwellings, (26) and good things in which they took delight. (27) Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] (28) Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. (29)
