Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha Mim! (1) By the Clear Book. (2) Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. (3) During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. (4) The command that We have been sending (5) As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); (6) He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, (7) There is no god but He; He gives life and makes to die; your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. (8) Nay, but they play in doubt. (9) Then wait you for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. (10) Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. (11) (Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers. (12) How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, (13) Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." (14) Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. (15) Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. (16) ۞ And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger, (17) Saying: Deliver to me the servants of Allah, surely I am a faithful apostle to you, (18) "And exalt not yourselves against God: for, verily, I come unto you with a manifest authority [from Him]; (19) I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me. (20) "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." (21) (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." (22) (His Lord answered): 'Set out with My worshipers in the night, for you will surely be followed. (23) And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host. (24) How many gardens and water-springs they left behind! (25) sown fields, and how noble a station, (26) And the comfort they enjoyed. (27) Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. (28) Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. (29)
