Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha Mim (1) By the Book that makes things clear;- (2) We revealed it on a Blessed Night, for We were intent on warning; (3) On that night is made distinct every precise matter - (4) determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) (5) A mercy from your Lord; indeed He only is the All Hearing, the All Knowing. (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, if you really do believe. (7) La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. (8) (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. (9) So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke (10) Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. (11) [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." (12) How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), (13) Then they turned away from him and said, "He is a madman, taught by others!" (14) We now remove the punishment for some days so you will again commit the same. (15) On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. (16) ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. (17) "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! (18) Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. (19) And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me. (20) If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." (21) And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.' (22) (The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued. (23) And leave the sea intervening; surely they are a host that shall be drowned. (24) How many of gardens and springs do they [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people] left. (25) And fields and grand palaces! (26) And favours amongst which they were rejoicing! (27) Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. (28) So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. (29)
