Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim (1) CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! (2) Verily We have sent it down on a blessed night, verily We were to become warners. (3) On which all affairs are sorted out and decided (4) As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: (5) as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). (7) There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. (8) In fact, the unbelievers have doubts because of excessive involvement in worldly affairs. (9) Wait for the day (which will come before the Day of Judgment) when the sky will give out dense smoke (10) Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. (11) 'Our Lord, remove this punishment from us, we are believers' (12) How can there be remembrance for them, when a messenger making plain (the Truth) had already come unto them, (13) but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' (14) Indeed, We will remove the torment for a little. Indeed, you [disbelievers] will return [to disbelief]. (15) On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. (16) ۞ And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger, (17) (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. (18) And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: (19) And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me. (20) "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." (21) Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". (22) (He was told): “Set out with My servants by night for you will certainly be pursued. (23) And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” (24) How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind, (25) And corn-fields and noble buildings, (26) And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; (27) Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. (28) Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite. (29)
