Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Mim. (1) I swear by the illustrious Book. (2) We sent it down during a Blessed Night: for We (ever) wish to warn (against Evil). (3) On that night is made distinct every precise matter - (4) by Our own command -- We have been sending messages, (5) A mercy from thy Lord. Verily He! He is the Hearer, the Knower. (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). (7) There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. (8) Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. (9) Watch for the Day when the heaven will bring clear smoke, (10) Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. (11) Lord, remove this torment from us for we are believers". (12) [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, (13) And they had turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman? (14) Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth. (15) But on that Day We will assault them most mightily, and then We shall revenge! (16) ۞ We tried the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them, (17) [Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allah. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger," (18) And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” (19) I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. (20) And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. (21) Then he called upon his Lord: these are a people guilty. (22) 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. (23) Cross the sea by cutting a path through it. Pharaoh's army will be drowned. (24) [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, (25) and sown fields, fine sitting places, (26) and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! (27) We gave these as an inheritance to other people. (28) So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. (29)
