Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) (1) The perspicuous Book is witness (2) Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- (3) Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom (4) by Our own command -- We have been sending messages, (5) (As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. (7) There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. (8) In fact, the unbelievers have doubts because of excessive involvement in worldly affairs. (9) But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke (10) Covering the people, this is a painful torment. (11) (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” (12) How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), (13) Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. (14) [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] (15) On the Day whereon We assault them with the greatest assault, verily We shall take vengeance. (16) ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): (17) "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! (18) "And exalt not yourselves against God: for, verily, I come unto you with a manifest authority [from Him]; (19) "And truly, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me (or call me a sorcerer or kill me). (20) And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. (21) And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. (22) God said, "Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued. (23) And leave the sea intervening; surely they are a host that shall be drowned. (24) How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, (25) And fields and stately mansions, (26) and the life of ease in which they took delight! (27) Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). (28) And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. (29)
