Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. (1) By the Book that makes things clear;- (2) (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- (3) During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. (4) The command that We have been sending (5) A mercy from thy Lord. Verily He! He is the Hearer, the Knower. (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you people believe. (7) there is no deity save Him: It is He who gives both life and death -- He is your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers, (8) Rather they are in doubt, playing. (9) So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke (10) That shall overtake men; this is a painful punishment. (11) (Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers. (12) How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, (13) but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' (14) We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). (15) On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. (16) ۞ And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a noble apostle, (17) (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. (18) And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. (19) And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me. (20) And if you do not believe me, then leave me' (21) And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.' (22) So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. (23) “And leave the sea as it is, parted in several places; indeed that army will be drowned.” (24) How many gardens and water-springs they left behind! (25) and sown fields, fine sitting places, (26) and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! (27) Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. (28) And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. (29)
