Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim (1) By the Book that makes things clear, (2) that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. (3) On this night, every absolute command coming from Us becomes distinguishable. (4) By a command from Us indeed it is We Who send. (5) (As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you (but) have a faith with certainty. (7) There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. (8) Aye! they're in doubt sporting. (9) But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke (10) That shall overtake men; this is a painful punishment. (11) (They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!" (12) How can a warning benefit them? The Apostle who explained all things clearly had come to them, (13) yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” (14) We now remove the punishment for some days so you will again commit the same. (15) On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. (16) ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, (17) "Deliver the creatures of God to me. I am the trusted messenger sent to you. (18) And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” (19) And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me. (20) If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." (21) And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.' (22) (His Lord answered): 'Set out with My worshipers in the night, for you will surely be followed. (23) And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' (24) They left how many gardens and fountains, (25) corn-fields, gracious mansions, (26) And favours amongst which they were rejoicing! (27) Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; (28) Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, (29)
