Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Ha-Mim. (1) CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! (2) (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- (3) In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, (4) by Our command. Verily, We were set to send a Messenger (5) as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. (7) There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. (8) Nay! They play in doubt. (9) So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. (10) That will envelop the people. This will be a painful punishment. (11) (Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers. (12) How can a warning benefit them? The Apostle who explained all things clearly had come to them, (13) Yet they turned their backs on him and said: One taught (by others), a madman. (14) Verily We shall remove the torment for a while; but verily ye shall revert. (15) The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. (16) ۞ And verily We tried before them Pharaoh's folk, when there came unto them a noble messenger, (17) "Deliver the creatures of God to me. I am the trusted messenger sent to you. (18) "And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest. (19) "And truly, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me (or call me a sorcerer or kill me). (20) But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone." (21) And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. (22) We told him, "Leave the city with My servants during the night. You will be pursued. (23) Then leave the sea calm they are an army that will be drowned. (24) [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, (25) and sown fields, fine sitting places, (26) and good things in which they took delight. (27) Thus it was; and We passed them on to another people. (28) Neither did the heavens weep for them, nor the earth, nor were they granted respite. (29)
