Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha Mim. (1) By the luminious Book. (2) that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. (3) On this night, every absolute command coming from Us becomes distinguishable. (4) As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: (5) as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. (7) there is no deity save Him: It is He who gives both life and death -- He is your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers, (8) Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. (9) Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, (10) engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. (11) Our Lord! remove from us the torment, verily we shall become believers. (12) How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. (13) Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" (14) Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). (15) On the Day whereon We assault them with the greatest assault, verily We shall take vengeance. (16) ۞ We tried Pharaoh's nation before them. A noble Messenger came to them, (17) Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, (18) Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. (19) "And truly, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me (or call me a sorcerer or kill me). (20) And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. (21) Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.” (22) (His Lord answered): 'Set out with My worshipers in the night, for you will surely be followed. (23) Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." (24) How many of the gardens and fountains have they left! (25) And corn-fields and noble buildings, (26) And pleasant things wherein they took delight! (27) Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; (28) The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. (29)
