Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) (1) By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, (2) Verily We have sent it down on a blessed night, verily We were to become warners. (3) In it every wise matter is determined (4) As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - (5) A mercy from your Lord; indeed He only is the All Hearing, the All Knowing. (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. (7) There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. (8) Nay, they are in doubt, they sport. (9) But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke (10) Covering the people; this is a painful torment. (11) Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us we now accept faith.” (12) How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger. (13) And they had turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman? (14) We are removing the punishment a little, but you revert. (15) on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! (16) ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, (17) "Send the servants of God with me. I am a trustworthy Messenger sent to you. (18) And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: (19) And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. (20) "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." (21) (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." (22) (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. (23) And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. (24) How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind, (25) And fields and stately mansions, (26) And the comfort they enjoyed. (27) Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. (28) And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. (29)
