Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha, Meem. (1) By oath of this clear Book. (2) Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- (3) In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, (4) at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] (5) as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, (6) He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, (7) There is no worship except for Him He gives life and causes death; your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. (8) Aye! they're in doubt sporting. (9) So watch for the Day when the sky will come down with a pall of smoke, (10) enveloping all mankind, [and causing the sinners to exclaim:] "Grievous is this suffering! (11) "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." (12) How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger. (13) Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" (14) We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). (15) However, We shall truly take Our revenge on the day when the great seizure takes place. (16) ۞ We tried Pharaoh's nation before them. A noble Messenger came to them, (17) (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. (18) Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. (19) And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. (20) But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” (21) Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.” (22) And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; (23) And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. (24) How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, (25) And fields and grand palaces! (26) And pleasant things wherein they took delight! (27) Even so; and We caused to inherit them another people. (28) Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite. (29)
