Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Ha Mim (1) By the Clear Book (2) Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. (3) Whereon every wise command is made clear (4) [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] (5) As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); (6) the Lord of the heavens and the earth and of all that is between them: if you would only have sure faith. (7) There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. (8) Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. (9) So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke (10) Covering the people, this is a painful torment. (11) Lord, remove this torment from us for we are believers". (12) How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, (13) whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? (14) We are removing the punishment a little, but you revert. (15) Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. (16) ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. (17) Who said, “Give the bondmen of Allah into my custody; I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger for you.” (18) And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. (19) And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me. (20) And if you do not believe me, then leave me' (21) (But they were aggressive), so he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying): "These are indeed the people who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)." (22) Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, (23) And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. (24) How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, (25) and sown fields, fine sitting places, (26) And the comfort they enjoyed. (27) Even so; and We caused to inherit them another people. (28) And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. (29)
