Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha-Mim. (1) By oath of this clear Book. (2) Verily We have sent it down on a blessed night, verily We were to become warners. (3) therein every wise bidding (4) by Our own command -- We have been sending messages, (5) As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. (6) the Lord of the heavens and the earth and of all that is between them: if you would only have sure faith. (7) There is no god except He. He revives and causes to die. (He is) your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. (8) (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. (9) Then wait you for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. (10) covering the people; this is a painful chastisement. (11) O our Sustainer, relieve us of suffering, for, verily, we [now] believe [in Thee]!" (12) How is it possible for them to accept guidance, whereas a Noble Messenger who speaks clearly has already come to them? (13) Then they turned away from him and said, "He is a madman, taught by others!" (14) We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). (15) On the day when We will seize (them) with the most violent seizing; surely We will inflict retribution. (16) ۞ And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger, (17) (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. (18) Do not set yourselves above God: I bring you clear authority. (19) And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me. (20) And if ye will not believe in me, then let me alone. (21) And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. (22) Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, (23) And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." (24) How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, (25) And crops and noble sites (26) and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! (27) Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! (28) And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. (29)
