Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim! (1) By the Clear Book. (2) Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. (3) Whereon every wise command is made clear (4) The command that We have been sending (5) (As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. (6) the Lord of the heavens and the earth and of all that is between them: if you would only have sure faith. (7) There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. (8) Yet they are lost in doubt and play. (9) Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, (10) engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. (11) O our Sustainer, relieve us of suffering, for, verily, we [now] believe [in Thee]!" (12) How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! (13) whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? (14) Indeed, We will remove the torment for a little. Indeed, you [disbelievers] will return [to disbelief]. (15) The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. (16) ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. (17) "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! (18) And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: (19) I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. (20) If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." (21) He therefore prayed to his Lord, “These are a guilty nation!” (22) (His Lord answered): 'Set out with My worshipers in the night, for you will surely be followed. (23) "And leave the sea as it is (quiet and divided). Verily, They are a host to be drowned." (24) How many were the gardens, springs, (25) And crops and noble sites (26) and [all that] life of ease in which they used to delight! (27) Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; (28) Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, (29)
