Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha, Meem. (1) By the Book that makes things clear;- (2) Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- (3) During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. (4) As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: (5) A mercy from your Lord; indeed He only is the All Hearing, the All Knowing. (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). (7) There is no worship except for Him He gives life and causes death; your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. (8) Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. (9) Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke. (10) Which would envelope mankind. That would be a grievous affliction. (11) "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." (12) But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, (13) And they had turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman? (14) We are removing the punishment a little, but you revert. (15) On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. (16) ۞ And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a noble apostle, (17) (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. (18) And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” (19) "For me, I have sought safety with my Lord and your Lord, against your injuring me. (20) And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. (21) Then he called to his Lord: "These are a sinful people." (22) Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, (23) And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." (24) How many were the gardens, springs, (25) and cornfields and splendid buildings, (26) And the comfort they enjoyed. (27) Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! (28) And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. (29)
