Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha'. Mim. (1) The perspicuous Book is witness (2) We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night indeed it is We Who warn. (3) Whereon every wise command is made clear (4) determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) (5) A Mercy from your Lord, He is the Hearer, the Knower. (6) the Lord of the heavens and the earth and of all that is between them: if you would only have sure faith. (7) there is no deity save Him: It is He who gives both life and death -- He is your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers, (8) Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. (9) Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible, (10) engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. (11) (They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" (12) But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, (13) Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" (14) 'Behold, We are removing the chastisement a little; behold, you revert!' (15) On the Day whereon We assault them with the greatest assault, verily We shall take vengeance. (16) ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] (17) Who said, “Give the bondmen of Allah into my custody; I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger for you.” (18) Do not consider yourselves above God. I shall show you a manifest authority (in support of my truthfulness). (19) and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. (20) "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." (21) Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". (22) So go forth with My servants by night; surely you will be pursued: (23) And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." (24) How many gardens and water-springs they left behind! (25) And cornfields and goodly positions. (26) And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; (27) Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). (28) And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. (29)
