Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) (1) By the Clear Book. (2) Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning - (3) on that night every wise decree is specified (4) determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) (5) in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. (7) There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. (8) Yet they play about in doubt. (9) Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible, (10) Covering the people; this is a painful torment. (11) Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." (12) How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. (13) Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." (14) Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. (15) Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. (16) ۞ We tried Pharaoh's nation before them. A noble Messenger came to them, (17) (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. (18) Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. (19) and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. (20) And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. (21) And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. (22) So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. (23) “And leave the sea as it is, parted in several places; indeed that army will be drowned.” (24) How many of the gardens and fountains have they left! (25) and cornfields and splendid buildings, (26) And the delights which they had been enjoying! (27) Thus (it was), and We gave them as a heritage to another people. (28) So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. (29)
