Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. (1) By oath of this clear Book. (2) We sent it down during a Blessed Night: for We (ever) wish to warn (against Evil). (3) on that night every wise decree is specified (4) As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: (5) as a mercy (for the human being) from your Lord. Your Lord is All-hearing and All-knowing. (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. (7) There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. (8) Yet they are in doubt, playing. (9) Wait for the day (which will come before the Day of Judgment) when the sky will give out dense smoke (10) Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. (11) Our Lord! remove from us the punishment; surely we are believers. (12) How should they have the Reminder, seeing a clear Messenger already came to them, (13) Then they turned away from him and said, "He is a madman, taught by others!" (14) Indeed, We will remove the torment for a little. Indeed, you [disbelievers] will return [to disbelief]. (15) On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. (16) ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them (17) [Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allah. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger," (18) "And exalt not yourselves against God: for, verily, I come unto you with a manifest authority [from Him]; (19) I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me. (20) If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." (21) Then he called upon his Lord: these are a people guilty. (22) We commanded him, “Journey with My bondmen in a part of the night you will be pursued.” (23) “And leave the sea as it is, parted in several places; indeed that army will be drowned.” (24) How many gardens did they leave behind, and how many fountains (25) And the cornlands and the goodly sites (26) and [all that] life of ease in which they used to delight! (27) Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). (28) And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. (29)
