Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Ha. Mim. (1) By the Book that makes things clear, (2) We sent it down during a Blessed Night: for We (ever) wish to warn (against Evil). (3) In it every wise matter is determined (4) By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), (5) as a mercy (for the human being) from your Lord. Your Lord is All-hearing and All-knowing. (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. (7) There is no god but He: He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore. (8) Nay, they are in doubt, they sport. (9) Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, (10) Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. (11) Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." (12) But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, (13) Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." (14) Verily We shall remove the torment for a while; but verily ye shall revert. (15) on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! (16) ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): (17) Saying: "Restore to me the Servants of Allah: I am to you an messenger worthy of all trust; (18) and, 'Rise not up against God; behold, I come to you with a clear authority, (19) I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me. (20) And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. (21) And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.' (22) And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; (23) And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." (24) How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind, (25) And cornfields and goodly positions. (26) and the life of ease in which they took delight! (27) Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). (28) and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. (29)
