Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha-Mim. (1) CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! (2) that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. (3) Therein every wise affair is made distinct, (4) As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: (5) in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, if you really do believe. (7) There is no god but He; He gives life and makes to die; your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. (8) Nay, they are in doubt, they sport. (9) Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. (10) enveloping all mankind, [and causing the sinners to exclaim:] "Grievous is this suffering! (11) O our Sustainer, relieve us of suffering, for, verily, we [now] believe [in Thee]!" (12) How can there be remembrance for them, when a messenger making plain (the Truth) had already come unto them, (13) but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' (14) Verily We shall remove the torment for a while; but verily ye shall revert. (15) One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution! (16) ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, (17) (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. (18) And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. (19) I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. (20) But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone." (21) Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." (22) So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. (23) Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." (24) [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, (25) And cornfields and goodly positions. (26) And pleasant things wherein they took delight! (27) Thus (it was), and We gave them as a heritage to another people. (28) Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they respited; (29)
