Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
HaMeem (1) By the Scripture that maketh plain (2) Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- (3) Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. (4) As commands from Us. It is indeed We who send (messengers), (5) A mercy from thy Lord. Verily He! He is the Hearer, the Knower. (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. (7) There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. (8) Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. (9) So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke (10) Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. (11) (They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!" (12) But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them (13) but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' (14) Verily We shall remove the torment for a while; but verily ye shall revert. (15) On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. (16) ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, (17) Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. (18) And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. (19) and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. (20) And if ye will not believe in me, then let me alone. (21) And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.' (22) God said, "Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued. (23) Cross the sea by cutting a path through it. Pharaoh's army will be drowned. (24) [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, (25) And green crops (fields etc.) and goodly places, (26) And the comfort they enjoyed. (27) Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. (28) Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they respited; (29)
