Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Ha Mim. (1) The perspicuous Book is witness (2) Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. (3) therein every wise bidding (4) A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), (5) in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. (7) There is no god but He: He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore. (8) Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. (9) WAIT, THEN, for the Day when the skies shall bring forth a pall of smoke which will make obvious [the approach of the Last Hour,] (10) which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. (11) [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." (12) But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them (13) Yet they turned their backs on him and said: One taught (by others), a madman. (14) Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). (15) The day when We will seize with the greatest seizure We will indeed take revenge. (16) ۞ We tried Pharaoh's nation before them. A noble Messenger came to them, (17) Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, (18) And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. (19) And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: (20) And if you do not believe me, then leave me' (21) Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." (22) (His Lord answered): 'Set out with My worshipers in the night, for you will surely be followed. (23) And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” (24) They left how many gardens and fountains, (25) And crops and noble sites (26) and the life of ease in which they took delight! (27) Thus (it was), and We gave them as a heritage to another people. (28) And neither heaven nor earth shed a tear over them: nor were they given a respite (again). (29)
