Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha'. Mim. (1) I swear by the illustrious Book. (2) that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. (3) Therein every wise affair is made distinct, (4) By a command from Us indeed it is We Who send. (5) in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, (6) the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them - if you could but grasp it with inner certainty! (7) There is no god except He. He revives and causes to die. (He is) your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. (8) Nay, they are in doubt, they sport. (9) Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. (10) That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. (11) Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us we now accept faith.” (12) How can there be remembrance for them, when a messenger making plain (the Truth) had already come unto them, (13) Whereas they had then turned away from him and said, “He is a madman, tutored!”? (14) [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] (15) on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! (16) ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, (17) Saying: "Restore to me the Servants of Allah: I am to you an messenger worthy of all trust; (18) And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: (19) “And I take the refuge of my Lord and yours, against your stoning me.” (20) If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." (21) Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". (22) We commanded him, “Journey with My bondmen in a part of the night you will be pursued.” (23) Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." (24) How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind, (25) and sown fields, fine sitting places, (26) And the comfort they enjoyed. (27) Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). (28) Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. (29)
