Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha'. Mim. (1) By the Clear Book. (2) that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. (3) Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom (4) Amran (i.e. a Command or this Quran or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers), (5) As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you (but) have a faith with certainty. (7) there is no deity save Him: It is He who gives both life and death -- He is your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers, (8) Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. (9) Wait for the day (which will come before the Day of Judgment) when the sky will give out dense smoke (10) which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. (11) Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." (12) But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, (13) Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. (14) Verily We shall remove the torment for a while; but verily ye shall revert. (15) On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. (16) ۞ We tried the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them, (17) "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! (18) Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. (19) And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me. (20) And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. (21) (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." (22) So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. (23) And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." (24) How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, (25) And corn-fields and noble buildings, (26) and good things in which they took delight. (27) Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] (28) The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. (29)
