Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim. (1) I swear by the illustrious Book. (2) Verily We have sent it down on a blessed night, verily We were to become warners. (3) therein every wise bidding (4) [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] (5) as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. (7) There is no god but He: He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore. (8) Nay! They play in doubt. (9) Wait for the day (which will come before the Day of Judgment) when the sky will give out dense smoke (10) Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. (11) [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." (12) How can there be remembrance for them, when a messenger making plain (the Truth) had already come unto them, (13) Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." (14) Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). (15) The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. (16) ۞ We had certainly tested the people of the Pharaoh before them to whom a noble Messengers had come, saying, (17) Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, (18) "And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest. (19) "And truly, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me (or call me a sorcerer or kill me). (20) “And if you do not believe in me, then have no relation with me.” (21) Then he called to his Lord: "These are a sinful people." (22) (His Lord answered): 'Set out with My worshipers in the night, for you will surely be followed. (23) (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," (24) How much they left behind of gardens and springs (25) and sown fields, fine sitting places, (26) and the life of ease in which they took delight! (27) Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. (28) Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, (29)
