Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha, Meem. (1) By the Book that makes things clear, (2) that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. (3) On this night, every absolute command coming from Us becomes distinguishable. (4) [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] (5) (As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. (6) He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, (7) There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. (8) (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. (9) Watch for the Day when the heaven will bring clear smoke, (10) Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. (11) Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us we now accept faith.” (12) How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! (13) then they turned away from him and said, 'A man tutored, possessed!' (14) Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). (15) on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! (16) ۞ And verily We tried before them Pharaoh's folk, when there came unto them a noble messenger, (17) Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. (18) "And exalt not (yourselves) against Allah. Truly, I have come to you with a manifest authority. (19) And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me. (20) If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." (21) Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.” (22) [Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued. (23) "And leave the sea as it is (quiet and divided). Verily, They are a host to be drowned." (24) How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind, (25) and sown fields, fine sitting places, (26) And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; (27) We gave these as an inheritance to other people. (28) So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. (29)
