Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha-Mim. (1) By the Book that makes things clear;- (2) (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- (3) On that night is made distinct every precise matter - (4) determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) (5) A mercy from your Lord. Verily He is all-hearing and all-knowing, (6) Lord of the heavens and earth, and all that between them is if you have faith. (7) There is no god but He: He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore. (8) But they are in doubt, amusing themselves. (9) WAIT, THEN, for the Day when the skies shall bring forth a pall of smoke which will make obvious [the approach of the Last Hour,] (10) engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. (11) "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." (12) How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! (13) Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" (14) We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). (15) On the day when We shall seize them with the greater seizure, (then) in truth We shall punish. (16) ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): (17) (and said): “Deliver to me Allah's servants. I am a trustworthy Messenger to you, (18) And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. (19) And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: (20) If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." (21) Then he called to his Lord: "These are a sinful people." (22) We commanded him, “Journey with My bondmen in a part of the night you will be pursued.” (23) And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host. (24) How much they left behind of gardens and springs (25) and fields of grain, and noble dwellings, (26) and the life of ease in which they took delight! (27) Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; (28) And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. (29)
