Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Ha. Mim. (1) CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! (2) Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning - (3) Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom (4) As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - (5) as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, (6) Lord of the heavens and earth, and all that between them is if you have faith. (7) There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. (8) (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. (9) Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible, (10) enveloping all mankind, [and causing the sinners to exclaim:] "Grievous is this suffering! (11) (They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!" (12) How can a warning benefit them? The Apostle who explained all things clearly had come to them, (13) Yet they turned their backs on him and said: One taught (by others), a madman. (14) Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). (15) On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. (16) ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, (17) (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. (18) And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. (19) And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. (20) If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." (21) (But they were aggressive), so he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying): "These are indeed the people who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)." (22) 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. (23) Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." (24) How many of the gardens and fountains have they left! (25) and sown fields, fine sitting places, (26) And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! (27) Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; (28) And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. (29)
