Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. (1) By the Scripture that maketh plain (2) that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. (3) on that night every wise decree is specified (4) By a command from Us indeed it is We Who send. (5) A mercy from your Lord, surely He is the Hearing, the Knowing, (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, if you really do believe. (7) There is no god except He. He revives and causes to die. (He is) your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. (8) Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. (9) Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke. (10) That will envelop the people. This will be a painful punishment. (11) Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us we now accept faith.” (12) How can a warning benefit them? The Apostle who explained all things clearly had come to them, (13) Whereas they had then turned away from him and said, “He is a madman, tutored!”? (14) Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). (15) Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. (16) ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them (17) Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. (18) "And exalt not (yourselves) against Allah. Truly, I have come to you with a manifest authority. (19) And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me. (20) “And if you do not believe in me, then have no relation with me.” (21) And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.' (22) (The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued. (23) "And leave the sea as a furrow (divided): for they are a host (destined) to be drowned." (24) How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, (25) And corn-fields and noble buildings, (26) and [all that] life of ease in which they used to delight! (27) Thus it was; and We passed them on to another people. (28) And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. (29)
