Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
HaMeem (1) The perspicuous Book is witness (2) Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. (3) Therein every wise affair is made distinct, (4) A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), (5) as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) (6) the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them - if you could but grasp it with inner certainty! (7) There is no god other than He, who gives you life and death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old. (8) Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. (9) So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke (10) That will envelop the people. This will be a painful punishment. (11) Our Lord! remove from us the punishment; surely we are believers. (12) How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,- (13) And they had turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman? (14) Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). (15) The day when We will seize with the greatest seizure We will indeed take revenge. (16) ۞ We tried the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them, (17) Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, (18) and do not exalt yourselves in defiance of Allah. I have come to you with a clear authority (as a Messenger). (19) “And I take the refuge of my Lord and yours, against your stoning me.” (20) If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." (21) Then he called to his Lord: "These are a sinful people." (22) 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. (23) And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' (24) They left - how many! of gardens and springs. (25) and cornfields and splendid buildings, (26) and the life of ease in which they took delight! (27) Even so; and We caused to inherit them another people. (28) And neither heaven nor earth shed a tear over them: nor were they given a respite (again). (29)
