Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
HaMeem (1) By oath of this clear Book. (2) that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. (3) During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. (4) By a command from Us indeed it is We Who send. (5) as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. (7) There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. (8) Yet they are lost in doubt and play. (9) Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke. (10) Covering the people, this is a painful torment. (11) 'Our Lord, remove this punishment from us, we are believers' (12) How can a warning benefit them? The Apostle who explained all things clearly had come to them, (13) yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” (14) [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] (15) The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. (16) ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): (17) Saying: "Restore to me the Servants of Allah: I am to you an messenger worthy of all trust; (18) Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. (19) I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. (20) If you do not want to believe, leave me alone". (21) And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.' (22) 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. (23) “And leave the sea as it is, parted in several places; indeed that army will be drowned.” (24) How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind, (25) and fields of grain, and noble dwellings, (26) and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! (27) Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] (28) And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. (29)
