Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 I swear by the illustrious Book. 2 We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night indeed it is We Who warn. 3 Whereon every wise command is made clear 4 Amran (i.e. a Command or this Quran or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers), 5 A mercy from your Lord. Verily He is all-hearing and all-knowing, 6 He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. 9 So wait thou the day whereon the heaven will bring forth a manifest smoke: 10 Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. 11 'Our Lord, remove this punishment from us, we are believers' 12 [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, 13 Then they had turned away from him (Messenger Muhammad SAW) and said: "One (Muhammad SAW) taught (by a human being), a madman!" 14 Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. 15 However, We shall truly take Our revenge on the day when the great seizure takes place. 16 ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] 17 Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, 18 "And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest. 19 And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: 20 "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." 21 Then he called upon his Lord: these are a people guilty. 22 (His Lord answered): 'Set out with My worshipers in the night, for you will surely be followed. 23 "And leave the sea as a furrow (divided): for they are a host (destined) to be drowned." 24 How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, 25 And the cornlands and the goodly sites 26 and the life of ease in which they took delight! 27 Thus it was; and We passed them on to another people. 28 Neither did the heavens weep for them, nor the earth, nor were they granted respite. 29
