Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha'. Mim. (1) By the clear Book, (2) that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. (3) In it every wise matter is determined (4) [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] (5) in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, (6) He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, (7) There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. (8) Nay, they are in doubt, they sport. (9) But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke (10) covering the people; this is a painful chastisement. (11) 'Our Lord, remove this punishment from us, we are believers' (12) How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, (13) then they turned away from him and said, 'A man tutored, possessed!' (14) Verily We shall remove the torment for a while; but verily ye shall revert. (15) On the Day whereon We assault them with the greatest assault, verily We shall take vengeance. (16) ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, (17) [Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allah. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger," (18) And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. (19) And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. (20) And if you do not believe me, then leave me' (21) But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" (22) (His Lord answered): 'Set out with My worshipers in the night, for you will surely be followed. (23) Cross the sea by cutting a path through it. Pharaoh's army will be drowned. (24) They left how many gardens and fountains, (25) And crops and noble sites (26) And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight! (27) Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. (28) Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite. (29)
