Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha'. Mim. (1) I swear by the illustrious Book. (2) We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night indeed it is We Who warn. (3) Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. (4) As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - (5) A mercy from your Lord; indeed He only is the All Hearing, the All Knowing. (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. (7) there is no deity save Him: It is He who gives both life and death -- He is your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers, (8) yet, they toy with their doubts. (9) Wait for the day (which will come before the Day of Judgment) when the sky will give out dense smoke (10) Covering the people, this is a painful torment. (11) (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” (12) How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. (13) Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" (14) Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. (15) On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. (16) ۞ And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a noble apostle, (17) (and said): “Deliver to me Allah's servants. I am a trustworthy Messenger to you, (18) Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. (19) I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. (20) "But if you believe me not, then keep away from me and leave me alone." (21) Then he called to his Lord: "These are a sinful people." (22) (His Lord answered): 'Set out with My worshipers in the night, for you will surely be followed. (23) And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” (24) They left - how many! of gardens and springs. (25) And the cornlands and the goodly sites (26) And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight! (27) Thus it was; and We passed them on to another people. (28) So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. (29)
