Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Ha-Mim. (1) By the clear Book, (2) Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning - (3) In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, (4) A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), (5) as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain, if only ye would be convinced. (7) There is only One Lord. It is He who gives life and causes things to die. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. (8) Nay, they are in doubt, they sport. (9) Watch for the Day when the heaven will bring clear smoke, (10) Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. (11) Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." (12) How can they benefit from admonition, seeing that a messenger had already come to them explaining things clearly? (13) then they turned away from him and said, 'A man tutored, possessed!' (14) We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. (15) on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! (16) ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], (17) "Deliver the creatures of God to me. I am the trusted messenger sent to you. (18) Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. (19) I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. (20) "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." (21) Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." (22) And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; (23) "And leave the sea as a furrow (divided): for they are a host (destined) to be drowned." (24) They left - how many! of gardens and springs. (25) And fields and grand palaces! (26) And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; (27) That is what We did; and We made another nation their heirs. (28) Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, (29)
