Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha'. Mim. (1) The perspicuous Book is witness (2) (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- (3) therein every wise bidding (4) an order from Us. We are ever sending. (5) A mercy from your Lord; indeed He only is the All Hearing, the All Knowing. (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). (7) There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. (8) Nay, they are in doubt, they sport. (9) Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, (10) enveloping all mankind, [and causing the sinners to exclaim:] "Grievous is this suffering! (11) 'O our Lord, remove Thou from us the chastisement; we are believers.' (12) But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them (13) And they had turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman? (14) We now remove the punishment for some days so you will again commit the same. (15) On the day when We shall seize them with the greater seizure, (then) in truth We shall punish. (16) ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them (17) (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. (18) Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. (19) "For me, I have sought safety with my Lord and your Lord, against your injuring me. (20) And if you do not believe me, then leave me' (21) (But they were aggressive), so he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying): "These are indeed the people who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)." (22) We told him, "Leave the city with My servants during the night. You will be pursued. (23) (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," (24) How many gardens did they leave behind, and how many fountains (25) and sown fields, fine sitting places, (26) and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! (27) Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. (28) And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. (29)
