Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Ha-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. (1) By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, (2) (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- (3) On that night is made distinct every precise matter - (4) by Our own command -- We have been sending messages, (5) A Mercy from your Lord, He is the Hearer, the Knower. (6) He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if only you would have strong faith. (7) There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. (8) Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. (9) WAIT, THEN, for the Day when the skies shall bring forth a pall of smoke which will make obvious [the approach of the Last Hour,] (10) Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. (11) (They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!" (12) But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, (13) Then they had turned away from him (Messenger Muhammad SAW) and said: "One (Muhammad SAW) taught (by a human being), a madman!" (14) We now remove the punishment for some days so you will again commit the same. (15) Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. (16) ۞ We had certainly tested the people of the Pharaoh before them to whom a noble Messengers had come, saying, (17) "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! (18) and do not exalt yourselves in defiance of Allah. I have come to you with a clear authority (as a Messenger). (19) “And I take the refuge of my Lord and yours, against your stoning me.” (20) If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." (21) (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." (22) And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; (23) And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." (24) How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, (25) And fields and grand palaces! (26) and [all that] life of ease in which they used to delight! (27) Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. (28) Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, (29)
