Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha. Mim. (1) I swear by the illustrious Book. (2) that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. (3) During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. (4) As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - (5) As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you people believe. (7) There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. (8) Yet they are lost in doubt and play. (9) So wait thou the day whereon the heaven will bring forth a manifest smoke: (10) enveloping people. That will be a grievous scourge. (11) "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." (12) How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. (13) Then they turned away from him and said, "He is a madman, taught by others!" (14) If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). (15) The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. (16) ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, (17) (and said): “Deliver to me Allah's servants. I am a trustworthy Messenger to you, (18) "And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest. (19) And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. (20) 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' (21) Then he called to his Lord: "These are a sinful people." (22) Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, (23) and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" (24) How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, (25) and sown fields and splendid mansions, (26) And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; (27) That is what We did; and We made another nation their heirs. (28) So the heavens and the earth did not weep for them, and they were not given respite. (29)
