Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Ha. Mim. (1) I swear by the illustrious Book. (2) Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning - (3) Whereon every wise command is made clear (4) an order from Us. We are ever sending. (5) as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, (6) He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, (7) There is no god other than He, who gives you life and death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old. (8) Rather they are in doubt, playing. (9) But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke (10) Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. (11) 'O our Lord, remove Thou from us the chastisement; we are believers.' (12) How can a warning benefit them? The Apostle who explained all things clearly had come to them, (13) And they had turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman? (14) We now remove the punishment for some days so you will again commit the same. (15) The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. (16) ۞ And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a noble apostle, (17) Saying: Deliver to me the servants of Allah, surely I am a faithful apostle to you, (18) Do not set yourselves above God: I bring you clear authority. (19) And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me. (20) 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' (21) (But they were aggressive), so he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying): "These are indeed the people who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)." (22) We commanded him, “Journey with My bondmen in a part of the night you will be pursued.” (23) Cross the sea by cutting a path through it. Pharaoh's army will be drowned. (24) How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, (25) and sown fields, fine sitting places, (26) And the comfort they enjoyed. (27) Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] (28) And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. (29)
