Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Ha. Mim. (1) By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, (2) We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night indeed it is We Who warn. (3) In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, (4) By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), (5) as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. (7) There is no god but He; He gives life and makes to die; your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. (8) Yet they are lost in doubt and play. (9) So watch for the Day when the sky will come down with a pall of smoke, (10) That will envelop the people. This will be a painful punishment. (11) "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." (12) How can they benefit from admonition, seeing that a messenger had already come to them explaining things clearly? (13) and they turned away, saying, "He is a trained and insane person". (14) Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). (15) The day when We will seize with the greatest seizure We will indeed take revenge. (16) ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, (17) saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, (18) Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. (19) I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. (20) And if ye will not believe in me, then let me alone. (21) He therefore prayed to his Lord, “These are a guilty nation!” (22) We commanded him, “Journey with My bondmen in a part of the night you will be pursued.” (23) And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." (24) They left - how many! of gardens and springs. (25) And the cornlands and the goodly sites (26) And comfort wherein they were amused. (27) Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). (28) and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. (29)
