Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha Mim! (1) By the clear Book, (2) Verily We have sent it down on a blessed night, verily We were to become warners. (3) Whereon every wise command is made clear (4) [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] (5) A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, (6) He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, (7) there is no deity save Him: It is He who gives both life and death -- He is your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers, (8) Rather they are in doubt, playing. (9) So watch for the day when the sky begins to emit clear smoke, (10) Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. (11) Our Lord! remove from us the torment, verily we shall become believers. (12) How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, (13) But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." (14) 'Behold, We are removing the chastisement a little; behold, you revert!' (15) But on that Day We will assault them most mightily, and then We shall revenge! (16) ۞ And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a noble apostle, (17) (and said): “Deliver to me Allah's servants. I am a trustworthy Messenger to you, (18) and do not exalt yourselves in defiance of Allah. I have come to you with a clear authority (as a Messenger). (19) I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. (20) But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” (21) (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." (22) (His Lord answered): 'Set out with My worshipers in the night, for you will surely be followed. (23) And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” (24) How much they left behind of gardens and springs (25) And crops and noble sites (26) And the comfort they enjoyed. (27) Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] (28) Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. (29)
