Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) (1) By the Clear Book (2) We revealed it on a Blessed Night, for We were intent on warning; (3) (We revealed it on the Night) wherein every matter is wisely determined (4) As commands from Us. It is indeed We who send (messengers), (5) as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. (7) There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. (8) (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. (9) So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. (10) That will envelop the people. This will be a painful punishment. (11) 'O our Lord, remove Thou from us the chastisement; we are believers.' (12) [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, (13) but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' (14) Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). (15) The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. (16) ۞ We tried Pharaoh's nation before them. A noble Messenger came to them, (17) saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, (18) And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” (19) "For me, I have sought safety with my Lord and your Lord, against your injuring me. (20) And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. (21) Then he supplicated to his Lord saying: 'These are sinful people' (22) God said, "Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued. (23) "And leave the sea as a furrow (divided): for they are a host (destined) to be drowned." (24) How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, (25) and sown fields and splendid mansions, (26) and pleasant things in which they delighted! (27) Thus (it was), and We gave them as a heritage to another people. (28) The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. (29)
