Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
HA MIM. (1) By the Clear Book (2) Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. (3) On which all affairs are sorted out and decided (4) Amran (i.e. a Command or this Quran or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers), (5) A mercy from thy Lord. Verily He! He is the Hearer, the Knower. (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. (7) There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. (8) Nay! They play in doubt. (9) So watch for the Day when the sky will come down with a pall of smoke, (10) which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. (11) (They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!" (12) How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger. (13) whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? (14) 'Behold, We are removing the chastisement a little; behold, you revert!' (15) On the day when We shall seize them with the greater seizure, (then) in truth We shall punish. (16) ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them (17) "Deliver the creatures of God to me. I am the trusted messenger sent to you. (18) And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. (19) And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: (20) "But if you believe me not, then keep away from me and leave me alone." (21) And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. (22) (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. (23) (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," (24) How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, (25) And fields and stately mansions, (26) And pleasant things wherein they took delight! (27) Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). (28) And neither heaven nor earth shed a tear over them: nor were they given a respite (again). (29)
