Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha'. Mim. (1) By oath of this clear Book. (2) that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. (3) On that night is made distinct every precise matter - (4) [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] (5) as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, (6) Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain, if only ye would be convinced. (7) There is no god but He: He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore. (8) Rather they are in doubt, playing. (9) Watch for the Day when the heaven will bring clear smoke, (10) enveloping people. That will be a grievous scourge. (11) [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." (12) How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,- (13) Yet they turned their backs on him and said: One taught (by others), a madman. (14) 'Behold, We are removing the chastisement a little; behold, you revert!' (15) On the day when We shall seize them with the greater seizure, (then) in truth We shall punish. (16) ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. (17) Saying: Deliver to me the servants of Allah, surely I am a faithful apostle to you, (18) Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. (19) I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. (20) And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. (21) Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.” (22) (The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued. (23) And leave the sea intervening; surely they are a host that shall be drowned. (24) [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, (25) And crops and noble sites (26) and [all that] life of ease in which they used to delight! (27) Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. (28) Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. (29)
