Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha-Mim. (1) By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, (2) Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- (3) On that [night] was made clear, in wisdom, the distinction between all things [good and evil] (4) As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: (5) in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, (6) He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, (7) there is no deity save Him: It is He who gives both life and death -- He is your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers, (8) Yet they play about in doubt. (9) Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. (10) which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. (11) Our Lord! remove from us the punishment; surely we are believers. (12) How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! (13) and they turned away, saying, "He is a trained and insane person". (14) Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). (15) On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. (16) ۞ And verily We tried before them Pharaoh's folk, when there came unto them a noble messenger, (17) Saying: "Restore to me the Servants of Allah: I am to you an messenger worthy of all trust; (18) And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” (19) "For me, I have sought safety with my Lord and your Lord, against your injuring me. (20) And if you do not believe me, [at least] stand away from me!" (21) Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.” (22) (He was told): “Set out with My servants by night for you will certainly be pursued. (23) (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," (24) How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, (25) And fields and stately mansions, (26) and the life of ease in which they took delight! (27) Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. (28) And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. (29)
