Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Ha. Mim. (1) By the Clear Book (2) that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. (3) Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. (4) A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), (5) A mercy from your Lord. Verily He is all-hearing and all-knowing, (6) the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them - if you could but grasp it with inner certainty! (7) There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. (8) Yet they are in doubt, playing. (9) Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. (10) That shall overtake men; this is a painful punishment. (11) Our Lord! remove from us the punishment; surely we are believers. (12) [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, (13) Then they turned away from him and said, "He is a madman, taught by others!" (14) [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] (15) The day when We will seize with the greatest seizure We will indeed take revenge. (16) ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): (17) "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! (18) "And exalt not yourselves against God: for, verily, I come unto you with a manifest authority [from Him]; (19) and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. (20) But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” (21) (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." (22) God said, "Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued. (23) (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," (24) How many of gardens and springs do they [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people] left. (25) And green crops (fields etc.) and goodly places, (26) and good things in which they took delight. (27) As such (it was). And We made other people inherit them. (28) Neither did the heavens weep for them, nor the earth, nor were they granted respite. (29)
