Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha'. Mim. (1) By the Book that makes things clear, (2) We sent it down during a Blessed Night: for We (ever) wish to warn (against Evil). (3) On this night, every absolute command coming from Us becomes distinguishable. (4) by Our command. Verily, We were set to send a Messenger (5) As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. (7) There is no god except He. He revives and causes to die. (He is) your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. (8) In fact, the unbelievers have doubts because of excessive involvement in worldly affairs. (9) So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. (10) engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. (11) (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” (12) How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger. (13) And they had turned away from him and said: One taught (by others), a madman? (14) Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). (15) On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. (16) ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): (17) Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, (18) And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” (19) "For me, I have sought safety with my Lord and your Lord, against your injuring me. (20) "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." (21) And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. (22) (He was told): “Set out with My servants by night for you will certainly be pursued. (23) And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. (24) They left how many gardens and fountains, (25) And cornfields and noble places! (26) And pleasant things wherein they took delight! (27) Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] (28) Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they respited; (29)
