Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim (1) By the clear Book, (2) We revealed it on a Blessed Night, for We were intent on warning; (3) Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom (4) an order from Us. We are ever sending. (5) A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. (7) There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. (8) Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. (9) WAIT, THEN, for the Day when the skies shall bring forth a pall of smoke which will make obvious [the approach of the Last Hour,] (10) which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. (11) (Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers. (12) How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), (13) and they turned away, saying, "He is a trained and insane person". (14) If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). (15) One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution! (16) ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, (17) Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. (18) And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” (19) I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. (20) If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." (21) Then he called upon his Lord: these are a people guilty. (22) We told him, "Leave the city with My servants during the night. You will be pursued. (23) "And leave the sea as a furrow (divided): for they are a host (destined) to be drowned." (24) How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, (25) And fields and grand palaces! (26) And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! (27) Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! (28) And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. (29)
