Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. (1) By the Scripture that maketh plain (2) that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. (3) On this night, every absolute command coming from Us becomes distinguishable. (4) As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: (5) A Mercy from your Lord, He is the Hearer, the Knower. (6) The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you people believe. (7) There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. (8) Nay, they are in doubt, they sport. (9) So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke (10) That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. (11) (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” (12) But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them (13) but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' (14) Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). (15) The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. (16) ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, (17) "Deliver the creatures of God to me. I am the trusted messenger sent to you. (18) "And exalt not (yourselves) against Allah. Truly, I have come to you with a manifest authority. (19) And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. (20) If you do not want to believe, leave me alone". (21) But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" (22) (His Lord answered): 'Set out with My worshipers in the night, for you will surely be followed. (23) And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” (24) How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, (25) And fields and stately mansions, (26) and [all that] life of ease in which they used to delight! (27) Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! (28) And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. (29)
